We’re a few days away from Autumn, which means Winter is on its way! Use this time to prepare your rental or building for the harsh, cold weather ahead. Here are some simple tips that will help you reduce your rental or office building’s energy costs.

  • Identify and fix drafts. Drafts can cause your rental or office building to feel more cool, and you’re more likely to blast the heat as a result. By identifying and sealing up any drafts, you’ll reduce your energy cost.
  • Properly insulate your rental or office building. If your buildings lack the proper insulation, they’re more likely to let heat escape. An poorly insulated building will also cause ice dams to form.
  • Use the sun. Open up the curtain and let in the sun. This will help naturally raise your building’s temperature by a few degrees at no cost to you.
  • Adjust the temperature. Do not blast the heat. Keep the temperature at a low setting. If you can manage covering up with a sweater, you’re likely to save on your energy costs. You can also turn down your rental or office building’s temperature during the night by setting the thermostat on a timer. This can save you up to 10% in energy costs. If your residents are responsible for controlling the heat in your building, make sure you provide them with a sheet on how they can save on their energy costs.
  • Lower your water heating costs. Turn down your water heater to the warm setting. The hot water does not need to be scalding. You’re less likely to burn your hands and more likely to save money.
  • Skimp on the holiday decorations. If you’re going to use lights for decoration, make sure you or your residents choose energy-saving LED lights. Use fewer of them to save on energy costs.
  • Use a power strip and unplug unused electronics.
