Whether you own a multi-family complex or an corporate commercial space, there are a couple of things you can do to help improve your building’s security and ensure the safety of your tenants. We put together a short list of security upgrades for your property. What security measures have you implemented in the past year? Comment below!

  • Upgrade Locks – Improve your building’s security by upgrading your locks. If you own a multi-family complex, install new locks on your tenants doors and entrances. For other commercial spaces for office use, consider installing a keycard system. Not only will you be able to limit public access, but you’ll also be able to control when your employees can access the building. If an employee loses their keycard, it will be easier to make them a new one versus changing all the locks throughout the building.
  • Install Cameras – Strategically install cameras throughout your property. Even the mere presence of cameras will help reduce security threats. Only install cameras in public places – like hallways or outdoor entrances. Inform your tenants about the security camera presence BEFORE you install them. You do not want to infringe on your tenant’s rights to privacy.
  • Install Security Alarms – In addition to implementing a keycard system, you may want to upgrade or install security alarms. Should an unauthorized person enter the premises or an emergency happen, you will be informed immediately and will be able to respond according.
  • Keep Utility Closets Locked – Have maintenance employees keep utility closets locked at all times. This prevents unauthorized access and greatly reduces the chance of utility equipment theft.
  • Update Emergency Information – Keep updated emergency information sheets posted throughout the building. Inform your tenants about any change in emergency information immediately. Send your tenants copies of emergency information for their use.
  • Hire Security Personnel – If your building has a high potential security threat, you may consider hiring security personnel or consulting with a security agency. This will help prevent any security threats and provide peace of mind to your tenants.
  • Increase Outside and Inside Lighting – Make sure all entrances, hallways, and parking lots are well lit. An area with ample lighting discourages criminal activity helping to ensure the safety of your residents.
  • Keep Emergency Items on Hand – Keep essential emergency items on hand. Replace emergency items should they expire, including all fire extinguishers. Emergency items might consist of: flashlights, non-perishable food items, blankets, fire extinguishers, emergency medical kit, etc.
