Meet Jody and Teara, the owners of a local favorite: CakeWalk. The business serves up delicious artisan treats such as cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats.
Tell us about how your business was started. How did you get involved in the industry?
We both worked for Lunds and Byerlys and we had a passion for baking and cake decorating. We have been friends for 10 years and talked about opening a shop together. In Winter of 2011 we decided to start our plans and move forward with our dream. Things moved very quickly, and we opened CakeWalk in October of 2012.
Where do you see your business going in the future?
We would like to expand with another shop and a possible cupcake truck to take around to fairs and events.
Why is your business located in Northfield?
Northfield is such a unique town. We both have been here numerous times and loved the character. We thought that a cupcake/cake shop would be the perfect fit for Northfield.
We are both from small towns and we love the way a community comes together to support local businesses. That is how we feel about Northfield; the people are so kind and really do want to see all of the shops succeed.
Tell us about the space your business is located in.
CakeWalk is located in a historic downtown Northfield building. The shop is lengthy but small and the kitchen is attached and open to customer view. With the volume of product we make every day, we need to maximize the space so we can work efficiently so we use the space behind our service counter to decorate cakes and pastry. This is unique, and the customers always enjoy seeing what treat we are making next!
What advice do you have for other business owners looking for a space?
Old buildings are not always perfect and require some maintenance, but they are full of charm. Keep in mind that some time will be spent on fixing small things.
