It’s never to early to start preparing your property for winter, especially in Minnesota. Our winter last year hit record lows with an average statewide temperature of 9.7 degrees, making it one of the coldest winters recorded in Minnesota history. Our blizzards and snow storms can be treacherous. Protect your property from severe weather damage and minimize resident or employee injury by following these simple tips.

  • Have your roof inspected. Repair any damage or secure any loose tiles. Clean the gutters of debris.
  • Repair windows. Replace any broken glass. Check for drafts around the window and seal any cracks.
  • Repair entryway. Check for any drafts around your entryway and seal them. Properly insulated doors and windows can reduce your heating bills.
  • Repair the sidewalk. If you can, fix any large sidewalk cracks or broken concrete. Snow and ice will conceal damage, making the walkway a very dangerous place.
  • Clear outside obstructions. This includes anything obstructing the path to your building’s entryway, low-hanging branches from bushes/trees or a frequently used parking spot.
  • Restock winter maintenance items. Purchase a new snow blower or shovel. Buy sidewalk salt.
  • Renew snow removal contracts. If you have a snow removal contract with a company, contact them to confirm your arrangement remains intact.
  • Have your insulation inspected. Make sure your building and water pipes are properly insulated. This will help prevent unwanted ice dams and pipe bursts. Insulation also keeps down heating costs.
  • Inspect heating system. Does your building’s heating system work properly? This would be a great time to repair any issues. You don’t want to wait until it becomes a problem.
  • Fire safety. Does your building have a sprinkler system? You’ll want to make sure the water pipes are secure, no leaks or drips.
  • Inform residents and employees. Do you have a snow emergency plan? Do your employees or residents know when your lots or streets will be plowed? Do you have a strict no space heater policy? Prepare a simple snow emergency sheet and distribute it. Include additional winter safety tips.
  • Review your insurance. Review your insurance policy before the winter begins. If you plan on purchasing more coverage for the winter, contact your insurance agent right away.
